Airport People

            Technical Staff

  1. airport director |n| is responsible to management of all airport activity including  maintenance functions to ensure a safe, efficient, legal, and profitable airport operation. The position entails supervising, coordinating, and reviewing aircraft operations; buildings and field maintenance and related matters; community relations; coordinating airline requirements for airport facilities; reviewing airport tenant activities for compliance with terms of leases and agreements; supervising enforcement of applicable federal, state and local regulations pertaining to airport operations, safety and security; and participating in planning for future growth and expansion.
  2. air traffic controller |n| a person trained to maintain the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic in the global air traffic control system.
  3. airfield operations assistant |n| the Airfield Operations Department manages and regulates the airfield ensuring that it is safe. An airfield operation assistant works both indoors and out.  The role is demanding,and requires individuals to think quickly and make decisions.
  4. ground services agents |n| they have the most physically demanding job at the airport. Their main responsibilities are aircraft marshalling, the coordination of aircraft loading and baggage handling, application of ground power and aircraft start-ups.  Agents must be in good health with normal colour vision.  They are outside in all weathers and this role requires great attention to health and safety.
  5. meteorologist |n| a specialist who studies processes in the earth's atmosphere that cause weather conditions.

             More Workers

  1. air cabin crew|n| the role of an air cabin crew member is to provide excellent customer service to passengers while ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the flight. They are trained to deal with security and emergency situations which may arise and can administer first aid to passengers.
  2. baggage handler |n| a person who takes passengers' bags and cases and puts them onto or removes them from an aircraft.
  3. "He's a baggage handler for British Airways."
  4. courier |n| a person who is employed by a travel company to give advice and help to a group of tourists on holiday.
  5. customer services agent |n| the key function of the Customer Services Agent is to respond to a vast range of enquiries for information from both internal and external customers of the Airport.  Agents must be well resented and prepared to answer questions in a professional manner. They must have a passion for working with people and delivering a high standard of service.  Customer Services Agents report to the Customer Services Supervisor.
  6. paramedic |n| a person who is trained to do medical work, especially emergency first aid, but is not a fully qualified doctor.
  7. passenger handling agent |n| the PHA does not usually work for a particular airline; they look after passengers flying with a variety of airlines. This agent should to undertake a variety of roles including dispatch, check-in and aircraft boarding. The role is busy and requires someone with energy, patience and an interest in delivering outstanding customer service.
  8. porter |n| a person whose job is carrying people's bags and other loads, especially at a train station, an airport or in a hotel.
  9. security guard |n| a person who is paid to protect property, assets, or people. Security guards are usually privately and formally employed civilian personnel. Security officers are generally uniformed and act to protect property by maintaining a high visibility presence to deter illegal and inappropriate actions, observing for signs of crime, fire or disorder; then taking action and reporting any incidents to their client and emergency services as appropriate.
  10. tour guide || someone who leads a tour to different places and tells people about their history, meaning etc.
  11. "Student tour guides take visitors on a one-hour tour of the campus."

            Officers

  1. customs official |n| a person who checks to see that everything coming into a country is legal and has been properly taxed.
  2. immigration official |n| an officer who ensuring immigration legislation covering rules of entry for Visa applicants, foreign nationals or those seeking asylum at the border, detecting and apprehending those that have breached the border and removing them, or pursuing those in breach of immigration and criminal laws.
  3. airport police units |n| they provide a wide range of law enforcement duties and responsibilities including patrol, investigation, traffic flow management, and control and response to airport emergencies.
  4. "Passengers at the departure gate were alarmed when airport police boarded the plane."
  5. firefighter / fireman |n| a member of a fire department who tries to extinguish fires.

  1. traveller |n| a person who is travelling or who often travels.
  2. "She is a frequent traveller to Belgium."
  3. "He passed the time chatting with fellow travellers."
  4. passenger |n| a person who is travelling in a car, bus, train, plane or ship and who is not driving it or working on it.
  5. tourist |n| a person who is travelling or visiting a place for pleasure.

  7. vacationer |US/ holidaymaker |UK|n| someone who is spending time in another place or country for enjoyment (used especially in newspapers and advertising).
  8. "Millions of vacationers come every year for the beaches and casinos."

  16. pilgrim |n| a person who travels to a holy place for religious reasons.

  18. "Christian pilgrims visiting Lourdes".
