         Main Definitions

  1. insect |n| an arthropod animal of a large class having a head, thorax, and abdomen, six legs, two antennae, and one or two pairs of wings.
  2. "What are those little bugs in my roses?"
  3. bug |n| a small insect.
  4. creepy-crawly |n| |informal| an insect, especially one that you are frightened of.
  5. "The mattress was covered in creepy-crawlies."
  6. aphid |n| |technical| a small insect that lives on the juice of plants and destroys them.
  7. "The leaves have been attacked by aphids."


          Insects Body Parts    

  1. head |n| the upper part of the body of an animal, typically separated for the rest of the body by a neck, and containing the brain, mouth, and sense organs.
  2. feeler |n| an animal organ such as an antenna that is used for testing things by touch or for searching for food.
  3. eye |n| the organ of sight in humans or other animals.
  4. trunk / thorax |n| a person's or animal's body apart from the limbs and head.
  5. abdomen |n| the rear part of the body of an arthropod.
  6. sting |n| a small sharp-pointed organ of an insect, plant, etc. capable of inflicting a painful wound by injecting poison.
  7. leg |n| each of the limbs on which a person or animal walks and stands.
  8. wing |n| a modified forelimb or other appendage enabling an insect to fly.


           Some Terms Related to Insects

  1. honey |n| a sweet, sticky yellowish-brown fluid made by bees and other insects from flower nectar.
  2. "The bee turns nectar into honey."
  3. insect bite |n| a painful wound caused by the thrust of an insect's stinger into skin.
  4. insect repellent |n| a substance applied to skin or clothing which deters or repels insects.
  5. insect spray |n| a substance which can be sprayed in the home to kill insects.
  6. "Mrs Saito moved among the rare plants with her insect spray, firing punitive bursts at their tender leaves."
  7. insecticide |n| a substance or agent used to kill insects and other arthropods.
  8. larvae |n| |pl larvae| an active immature form of an insect or other animal that undergoes metamorphosis, e.g. a caterpillar or tadpole.
  9. pest |n| a destructive insect or other animal that attacks crops, food, or livestock.
  10. tadpole |n| the tailed aquatic larva of an amphibian such as a frog, breathing through gills and lacking legs until the later stages of its development.
  11. wingless |n| lacking wings.
  12. swarms |n| a large or dense group of flying insects.
  13. wax |n| any of various substances of either mineral origin or plant or animal origin, they are solid at normal temperatures and insoluble in water.

  1. worm |n| any of numerous long, slender, soft-bodied, legless, bilaterally symmetrical invertebrates, including the flatworms, roundworms, acanthocephalans, nemerteans, gordiaceans, and annelids.
