        Main Definitions

  1. wind |n| air moving (sometimes with considerable force) from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure.
  2. "A cold wind was blowing from the east."
  3. "Strong winds caused damage to many buildings."
  4. "North wind."

  6. "Northwesterly winds."
  7. "Southwesterly winds."

        Soft Winds

  1. calm |adj| free from storm or wind.
  2. "It's a calm, cloudless day."
  3. breeze |n| a gentle pleasant wind.
  4. "The flowers were gently swaying in the breeze."
  5. "The pools are cooled by the sea breezes."
  6. sea breeze |n| a cooling breeze from the sea (during the daytime).
  7. chilling breeze |adj| a breeze that is moderately cold.
  8. flurry |n| a light brief snowfall and gust of wind.
  9. "He had to close the window against the flurries."
  10. gentle wind / light air |n| a slight wind (usually refreshing)
  11. "The breeze was cooled by the lake."
  12. "As he waited he could feel the air on his neck."
  13. daught / draft |n| a current of cool air which blows into a room, especially one that makes you fell uncomfortable.

         Strong Winds

  1. gale / windstorm |n| a storm with very strong wind but little or no rain or snow.
  2. "It’s blowing a gale."
  3. "Besides genetics, factors that keep most eastern old growth from soaring to the skies are thin, rocky soils and frequent hurricanes, windstorms , and ice storms."
  4. storm |n| a violent disturbance of the atmosphere with strong winds and usually rain, thunder, lightning, or snow.
  5. "These kinds of storms can produce rain, hail snow, thunder and lightning."
  6. squall |n| a sudden violent gust of wind or a localized storm, especially one bringing rain, snow, or sleet.

       Extreme Winds
  1. blizzard |n| a severe snowstorm with high winds and low visibility.
  2. "And then there are the weather warnings for hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards , floods, winds, and tides."
  3. cyclone |n| rapid inward circulation of air masses about a low pressure center, circling counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern.
  4. "The cyclone struck the village late last night."
  5. hurricane |n| a severe tropical cyclone usually with heavy rains and winds.
  6. "We had been warned there was a hurricane coming."
  7. twister / tornado / whirlwind |n| a localized and violently destructive windstorms occuring over land characterized by a funnel-shaped cloud extending toward the ground.
  8. "We had a tornado warning earlier in the evening.""They can cause dust devils and whirlwinds , though these are nothing when compared to the immense dust storms that can occur."
  9. tempest |n| a violent windy storm.

  11. typhoon |n| a violent tropical storm with very strong winds in the western Pacific or Indian oceans.
